Dancing Butterfly Experiment

DANCING BUTTERFLY – MAGNETIC FORCE EXPERIMENT

MATERIALS

  • Printed butterfly
  • String or thread
  • Magnet
  • Paperclip
  • Transparent bottle
  • Sticky tape

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXPERIMENT

  1. Print or cut a paper to a butterfly shape.
  2. Measure the height of the bottle (make sure the string is 1 inch lower than the bottle)
  3. Tie string to the paper clip and attach the printed butterfly to the paperclip.
  4. Stick the bottom of the string into the bottle with sticky tape. (inner bottle bottom part)
  5. Place the magnet on the bottle lid and stick with sticky tape.
  6. Close the bottle and slowly turn it. The butterfly will nearly reach the magnet.

what happens?

It will look like a butterfly floating in the air.

WHY?

The magnetic force will pull the steel paper clip and that will cause the butterfly to float in the air.
