WATER – CAPILLARY ACTION

MATERIAL

  • A clear jar
  • A stick of celery complete with leaves
  • Water
  • Red ink

  1. Fill the water in the jar.
  2. Add a few drops of ink
  3. put the celery in the colored water.

WHAT HAPPENS?

A few hours later the stick of celery and its leaves will turn red.

WHY?

The plant will absorb water from the ground through its roots. This process causes the red ink to rise up reach the ends of its leaves. This is called capillary action.
